Q&A with Tom Cyr – JSSI

Tom Cyr, Director, Business Development, JSSI

How long have you been at your current organization?

It will be twelve years in February.

What are your responsibilities within your organization?

Sales. I have a nine-state area in the Upper Midwest.

Describe a typical day or week in your role.

As is typical for any business development type; prospecting, pursuit and maintenance of current client relationships. Lot’s of travel.

What do you love most about your job?

The relationships. I’m very fortunate to have made many friends that will be lifelong friends in this business. JSSI has also brought me a lot of exposure to the aircraft sales and financial sides of the business, something I never thought I would be involved in but enjoy very much.

Why did working in the Business Aviation industry interest you, and how did you get started?

I got into it quite by accident. I went to A&P school (Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic Certificate) in 1980 with the intention of joining an airline and seeing the world. When I graduated, the economy and the airline industry were hurting so I ended up working for a while as a sheet metal mechanic and eventually become a field rep for a very well-known turbine engine OEM. This had me working with corporate aircraft operators all the time and evolved into my first sales position. Over the next two decades I held several sales and management roles in the turbine engine and aircraft MRO world. These experiences suited me well for my current position.

Who or what has been your greatest professional influence?

I’d have to say my father. His career was mainly in the maritime world but we had many similar roles and interests. We talked a lot about the business of business. He was always my sounding board and had an amazing ability to distill the complex down into the important manageable pieces.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Lucky Husband Father.

What one item would you never travel without on a long-haul flight?

My Sony noise cancelling headphones!

Finally, what is your hidden talent or hobby?

My wife Patty and I got into target archery with our three children several years ago. They all became pre-occupied with things like college, careers and marriage, but we continued on with it and now belong to an archery club and participate in leagues and events. All ages and walks of life show up at the club. We enjoy the comradery and trying to get better at it.
