Brief History
The Cessna Citation Sovereign was first unveiled in 1998 at the NBAA Annual convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, as a high-performance jet to plug the gap between the Excel/XLS and Citation X. The first flight of the Sovereign took place in February 2002 with FAA certification awarded in June 2004. Customer deliveries began later that same year. Production of the Citation Sovereign ended in 2013 as the Sovereign + started deliveries.
Worldwide Appeal
There are currently 348 Citation Sovereign aircraft in operation worldwide with 292 of those wholly owned and 8 in shared and 48 in fractional ownership. Of the 292 wholly owned Citation Sovereign aircraft in operation by continent, North America has the largest percentage at 63%, followed by Europe at 13% and South America at 10% for a combined total of 86%. Also, 31% of the 348 Citation Sovereign jets in operation today are in fleet ownership with the largest fleet operator (NetJets) having 43 aircraft. Additionally, 12% of the Citation Sovereign jets are leased.
