Race to Shanghai this spring

Race to Shanghai this spring

Each spring, Shanghai hosts the Formula 1® UBS Chinese Grand Prix.  This New York Times article “Short History of Shanghai” illustrates why this high-energy, fast-paced race is a fitting metaphor for visiting the largest city in China. Simply put, Shanghai has transformed itself from a fishing village at the mouth of the Yangtze River to a competitive, global financial giant.

Shanghai’s course took this turn most grandly in 1990 when China’s then-leader Deng Xiaoping set the city on a lightning-speed path to compete with Hong Kong by 2010. Indeed, many argue that Shanghai is a worthy competitor. As Xiaoping said, “If China is a dragon, Shanghai is its head.” Perhaps no longer should we think of China as an “emerging economy.” With Shanghai in a front position, Team China has arrived.

The F1 metaphor is an apt planning guide for your Shanghai visit. First, see what the Grand Prix itself is all about. These video highlights from last year’s edition showcase the speed, the glamour, the buzz, and the competitive spirit at its best. If you’re lucky enough to be in town for the event, check out this Grand Prix China Guide and venue overview.

The fast straights

Without question, Shanghai and its famous skyline has been transformed at breakneck-speed by business and economic initiatives. The crown achievement of this effort is the Shanghai Tower, located in the Lujiazui Finance and Trade District of Pudong. Officially opening this summer, it is the second-tallest skyscraper in the world (632 meters), next to Dubai’s  828-meter Burj Khalifa. Designed to withstand Shanghai’s regular 40 m.p.h. winds, this building has fascinating design and construction.

Also impressive is the Shanghai World Financial Center, the unique “bottle opener” building. The symbols of this “city of the future” escort the future quickly to today.

The best place to take in the Pudong skyline? Get a view from Bar Rouge, which tops Bund 18 across the Huangpu River. At this trendy night spot, you’ll discover talented mixologists and music-mixers that keep the fast pace going as you enjoy unmatched views of Pudong’s ever-changing skyline.

Speedy trendsetters take note, Bund 18 also offers a number of luxury shops, – including Cartier, Ermenegildo Zegna, Zhaoyi.

Yuyuan JSThe twists and turns

Despite Shanghai’s rapid push to transform itself into China’s—and the world’s—contemporary metropolis, the city’s many not-forgotten twists and turns harken back to Shanghai’s old-world charm and character. The Bund, the famous riverside promenade, beckons tourists from morning to night. Watch how this landmark stretch lights up at night. The core of the 1,500 meter historic Bund retains the glamourous feeling of European-style neoclassical buildings, most of which were built in the 1920s and 1930s. You’ll find Beaux Arts, art deco, Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance Revival buildings there, too. Along the way, discover luxury shops, restaurants, and nightclubs.

Other slower turns include a visit to the Yuyuan Garden (pictured)—just blocks south of The Bund. Leave the city’s overwhelming packed and fast-paced streets to find pure tranquility in this tucked-away garden. Likewise, go off the beaten path to the Jade Buddha Temple before you pick up the pace again—whether you’re in Shanghai for work or recreation.

The pit stops

For rejuvenating stops, visit the Old French Concession. You can escape the busy streets in the area along the three-lined streets between Julu and Huaihai Roads. Duck in to any number of boutiques, restaurants, or cafés. Afternoon tea is delightful. Or does looking for boutique designer clothes de-stress you? Try Changle and Xinle Roads. Here’s a walking tour guide preview if you’d like to get your bearings first. Or watch this video tour.

For extended pit stops, refresh at one of the former French Concession’s Fodor’s-recommended restaurants. Branching out to other neighborhoods? Test drive your course. You can consult additional reviews and reserve online.

Other options to slow down include a visit to the M50 complex (Moganshan Lane). This art gallery district is spearheaded by galleries such as ShanghART.
