Ken Elliott, Jetcraft VP Avionics Systems, wrote an article about "LVO becoming center stage and whatever solves the problem has to work every time" that was published in the January 2014 issue of Professional Pilot magazine.

January 2014 – As the aviation industry focuses on ADS-B, PBN and Datacom, the gaps fill in between operators and air traffic control, eventually allowing seamless 4D trajectory based operations pretty much anywhere. Well, that is the plan at least. In reality we find that as long as everyone  is equipped both ground and air, it is a nice clear day, the operation is approved and all of air  traffic control is on the same page, there is a chance flights may go as planned. Too often this is  not the case and debate continues determining the highest priority of operational  improvements hoping to mitigate failings.

The Global 5000 is one of 4 business jet aircraft models built by Bombardier to compete in the ultra-long range large-cabin business jet market. The ultra-long range market is defined as a new group of large cabin business jets that can fly 5,000 nm or greater. Today the ultra-long-range large cabin business jet market has exceeded 1,100 aircraft in operation.

As of July 2013, the Global 5000 market is comprised of 59% new vs. 41% pre-owned. The percentage for sale is 12.2% with 88% under an exclusive broker agreement and the average days on the market are 267 days.

Brief History

The ultra-long-range large cabin business jet market began in 1995 with the Gulfstream GV followed two years later by the Global Express. You would think that with such a historically loaded name, high school junior Nicholas Tesla Martin, “Nik,” would fret about filling the proverbial shoes of his namesake. According to Nik, however, he’s never felt pressure to take the same path as the man who made far-reaching achievements in electrical engineering; moreover, he regards his own engineering journey as a coincidence.

In August, Jetcraft Corporation and ExecuJet Group announced that Jetcraft had acquired ExecuJet’s business aircraft sales division. The rationale for the deal was simple: it would benefit both organisations’ clients “by offering the largest selection of quality new and pre-owned business aircraft from around the globe”. In many ways ExecuJet disposing of its sales arm simply followed the trend of large FBO/aircraft management businesses deciding to focus on their core revenue generation activities and free up senior management time from the complexities of selling into a difficult environment. We have seen this theme before with TAG Aviation and others. Unlike ExecuJet, Jetcraft specialises solely in new and pre-owned sales and the deal now makes it the largest aircraft brokerage on the planet.

The Business Case and Performance Metrics Work Group (BCPMWG) presented three reports at the Sept 19th meeting of the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) NextGen Advisory Committee (NAC). These reports were the culmination of two years of research that supports improved understanding of NextGen impacts.

The Fuel Data sharing report was especially well received by the committee, as well as NAC chair, Bill Ayer. The FAA has not yet had an opportunity to formally address the report, but will respond at the February NAC meeting.  Shortly after the NAC meeting, Michael Huerta referred to the research in these reports during a speech he delivered to the NextGen Institute public meeting on Friday, September 20th.

Forever the frugal partner, my wife for years diligently selected the lower cost shoe, then complained of foot pain and sought the advice of medical experts. She will willingly admit to ignoring my suggestion that the quality and subsequently price of the shoe is directly related to the comfort of the foot.
